Description
Potentilla megalantha also known as large-flowered Cinquefoil or by its synonym Potentilla fragariiformis, this clump-forming perennial is native to mountainous regions of Asia, including Japan. It belongs to the Rosaceae family and is prized for its vivid yellow blooms, drought tolerance, and suitability for rock gardens, borders, and alpine schemes.
Height and Spread
Height: Typically reaches 25–30 cm (10–12 inches), with flowering stems rising slightly above the foliage.
Spread: Forms a low mound around 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) wide.
Growth Habit: Compact and clump-forming, with hairy, trifoliate leaves resembling those of strawberries.
Its modest size makes it ideal for edging paths, filling gaps in sunny borders, or cascading over slopes and rockeries.
Flowers and Foliage
From late spring into summer (May–July), Potentilla megalantha produces clusters of large, saucer-shaped golden-yellow flowers, each 3–4 cm across. These blooms are rich in nectar and highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. The foliage is palmate and serrated, with a slightly hirsute texture that adds visual interest even when not in bloom. In autumn, the leaves may turn a soft lemon-yellow before dying back.
Growing Conditions
Light: Prefers full sun but tolerates dappled shade.
Soil: Well-drained, gritty, or poor soils; thrives in loam, chalk, or sandy substrates.
Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK (H7), tolerating temperatures below -20°C.
Aspect: Best in south- or east-facing positions with good drainage.
Wildlife and Garden Use
This cinquefoil is a reliable pollinator plant, ideal for wildlife-friendly gardens, alpine troughs, gravel gardens, and informal borders. It pairs well with Achillea, Knautia, and Artemisia, and its drought tolerance makes it a valuable choice for low-maintenance schemes.
