Description
Anemanthele lessoniana, commonly known as Pheasant’s Tail Grass, is one of the most captivating ornamental grasses for modern gardens. Its ability to shift colour through the seasons – from fresh green to copper, amber, orange and smoky purple – gives it a dynamic presence in borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic plantings. Moreover, its fine, arching foliage catches the light beautifully, creating movement and texture even in the slightest breeze.
Although native to New Zealand, it performs exceptionally well in UK gardens, especially when grown in free‑draining soil. As it matures, the plant forms a loose, fountain‑shaped clump that softens hard landscaping and blends seamlessly with perennials, shrubs and other grasses. Because it thrives without artificial light or heating, it is a strong candidate for low‑input, sustainable production systems.
